Concrete Worker

Job summary: Concrete workers set up forms for concrete footings, walls, slabs and site concrete: then they place and finish the concrete. They may at times apply color hardeners and release agents while installing stamped concrete.

Qualification

To perform this job successfully the individual must meet the minimum requirements. To be a journeyperson (fully skilled) at this position the individual must be able to perform each of the essential duties satisfactorily.

Minimum requirements

• High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required
• Have a current and valid Driver’s license, and reliable transportation
• 18 years or older.
• Previous concrete experience helpful but not required.
• Commercial Drivers license is a plus but not required.

Essential job functions

• Skills necessary to be a journeyperson for this position include but are not limited to the following:
• Able to identify types and sizes of lumber.
• Able to nail and install screws quickly and safely.
• Able to use hand tools to complete required tasks.
• Able to safely operate power saws and cut material in a neat and efficient manner.
• Quickly, correctly, and efficiently setup footing forms
• Quickly, correctly, and efficiently setup wall forms
• Quickly, correctly, and efficiently setup flatwork forms.
• Able to quickly, safely and efficiently install various materials and items in concrete forming.
• Able to grade materials to within a 1” tolerance.
• Able to tie rebar vertically and horizontally quickly and safely.
• Able to layout and properly install anchor bolts and vertical reinforcing.
• Knows how to use a finish trowel and is able to finish concrete properly and to sufficient quality.
• Knows how to use a magnesium trowel properly.
• Knows how to use a darby trowel properly.
• Know how to use a bull float properly.
• Be able to use trowels and floats to obtain level, flat and properly finished smooth and broomed concrete.
• Know how to use an edging trowel or concrete groover.
• Knows what to do, and can effectively implement the correct actions, if concrete begins to set to quickly.
• Operate a skid loader safely and efficiently.
• Operate skid loader to grade within 1″ tolerance
• Operate a rough terrain forklift safely and efficiently.
• Setup and run walk behind power trowels correctly with minimum errors
• Setup and run riding power trowels correctly with minimum errors
• Setup and run a power screed correctly with minimum errors
• Setup and run a power vibra strike screed correctly with minimum errors
• Setup and run a power rake correctly with minimum errors
• Setup and run a Copperhead laser screed correctly with minimum errors
• Identify visually the approximate slump of concrete.
• Determine correct concrete mix to use for the situation, weather and site conditions.
• Understand the admixtures available and know when and how to use them.
• Determine the correct amount of concrete, or fill, needed.
• Understand the types of concrete additives and their effect on concrete.
• Understand why concrete is air entrained and when it should be done and should not be done.
• Properly apply hardeners, sealers, curing agents and other surface applied chemicals.
• Mark and cut concrete quickly & neatly.
• Cut and bend rebar quickly, safely and correctly.
• Able to read and understand blueprints
• Able to properly set batter boards
• Able to layout a foundation, building and/or site concrete
• Able to set up and use site and laser transits to set heights correctly.
• Able to efficiently supervise at least two other employees while completing an assignment.

Mathmatical Skills

• Ability to easily add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to convert fractions to decimal numbers and convert decimals to fractions.
• Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving many variables in calm and reasonable manner.

Language Skills

• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
• Ability to understand the English language when spoken.
• Ability to effectively present or convey information in one-on-one or small group situations.
• Ability to write routine reports and simple correspondence
